District 9 Review

After watching the District 9 Trailer, I thought I had a good idea of what the movie would be about. But it's one of those movies where it's not completely different than what you expected, but rather, a bit off from what you expected. I had high expectations based on other critic's reviews, but I think it's overrated. I think the movie is worth the rent money (or download time for those of you who bootleg), but it's not a movie I would buy. It felt like The Fly mixed with Terminator (Not Terminator 2, more like Terminator 4).

When the movie first started, it almost seemed like a comedy or some type of parody....aliens living in the slums like poor people or something. But it soon became a more serious movie as the initial surrealism faded away and my mind becamed used to it and allowed the movie to feel more real. Think: Independence Day but more realistic and the aliens are actually exploited. There will definitely be a District 9 part 2, because the ending of the movie leaves the story unfinished.

All in all, I would give this movie a 75%. Lacking the 25% because it ends. I felt like there was going to be a big climax, a big war between aliens and humans....but it never came. There was a small battle scene within district 9, the slum neighborhood, but it never really spilled out into the outside world, with the exception of one scene where the main characters break into a lab to find some type of fuel they need to power the ship at the end. But yeah, I think it deserves a 75%.
