Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day Review

I just finished watching the movie Boondock Saints 2 - All Saints Day, the sequel to the original Boondock Saints movie, and I wasn't very impressed. It almost put me to sleep, though I'll admit that it had some pretty good action scenes in some instances and almost redeemed itself a few times. So I thought I'd write a review about my experiences with this movie. Spoiler Alert: If you haven't seen this movie, you may want to avoid reading this. I won't give away the whole movie, but some of the things I cover may ruin a few surprises this movie has to offer.

The movie Boondock Saints 2 - All Saints Day takes place in Ireland and Boston and starts right where the original Boondock Saints movie left off. The two brothers and their father are in Ireland when a Priest in Boston is murdered and the murder scene was arranged to make it look like the Saints were responsible. Now that they have been framed, and a religious holy man has been killed, they must return to Boston to avenge his death and set the record straight and clear their name.

The soundtrack for B.S. 2 really got on my nerves after awhile. It's mostly filled with loud abnoxious catholic type songs with operatic female vocals. Very epic, yet very annoying. In the first film there was only a few times where songs like these were used, and they were used tastefully. In this film, they definitely overdid it and it certainly became irritating early on in the movie. By the second half of the film, I was ready to turn it off, mostly on account of the soundtrack.

The villains in this movie were not diabolical enough. They just didn't seem very intimidating or scary, and there wasn't much character development between them and the main characters. Usually, when you're watching a movie, you have a good idea of who the top villain is. In this movie, it was unclear who the top villain was throughout most of the movie.

The movie was structured poorly as well. Once the movie reached the 1 hour and 20 minutes marker, I felt as if the movie was over and there wasn't much left to show or tell. But then it stretched on for another 40 minutes or so. It's not that the movie length was long, it's that the movie just had bad structuring and gave me that "ok this is the end of the film, the climax" feeling way too soon. This is most likely because of a combination of the annoying soundtrack and poor character development. After about an hour, I was seriously irritated with the soundtrack, and it appeared that all the top bad guys were losing in their fight against the good guys. So I was already ready to turn it off and anticipating an ending, but after a huge shootout involving most of the villains, the movie still had 40 minutes left.

One surprise that I enjoyed in this movie was the return of Willem Dafoe's character, Paul Smecker. But it was short-lived and very brief, that it just wasn't enough to redeem the boring storyline. So overall, if I had to rate this movie on a scale of one to ten, I would probably give it a two or a three. It wasn't the worst, but definitely didn't make it to the average marker or anywhere near it. I was much more satisfied with the first Boondock Saints, and would recommend that one over this one.
